A manufacturer of metal components for well-known furniture and kitchen brands in Lithuania was facing a clear challenge: The process wastewater generated during production needed to be treated reliably and in full compliance with local discharge regulations. The company operates various washing and cleaning baths for surface treatment and degreasing of parts. Although the daily wastewater volume is relatively low (less than 10 m³/day), the pollution load is extremely high.
The production facilities were already fully utilized, leaving no space for additional treatment equipment inside. At the same time, the company’s customers expected transparent and environmentally responsible wastewater management – a key requirement in modern sustainability and supply chain standards.
To ensure stable effluent quality, strengthen trust with business partners, and improve operational reliability, the company decided to upgrade its existing wastewater treatment system. The new solution needed to be compact, fully integrated, and installable without interfering with ongoing production operations.
The wastewater itself presented significant technical challenges: Despite the low flow rate, the pollutant concentrations were high enough to rule out simple treatment methods. Laboratory analysis showed:
This combination of poorly biodegradable organics, oils, fats, and metal salts meant that conventional coagulation and flocculation alone could not provide stable results. Biological treatment was also limited due to low biodegradability. At the same time, the system needed to be easy to operate without requiring constant adjustments or high staffing effort.
Another key factor was the installation environment: The treatment system was to be placed outside the main building, in a large PVC storage tent. This required a compact and enclosed design, winter-proof configuration, clear routing of pipelines, and a well-thought-out sludge handling concept. Operational security and remote support were also important, as the plant operators were not wastewater specialists.
PPU Umwelttechnik GmbH developed a customized, containerized Plug & Play treatment system, integrating all required process stages into two fully equipped technical containers. Prior to design finalization, wastewater samples were tested extensively in PPU’s in-house laboratory to optimize chemical conditioning, reaction parameters, and biological treatment performance.
The system includes the following treatment modules:
The result is a clear and stable effluent, with heavy metal concentrations below detection limits and COD reduced to below 1,000 mg/l.
To ensure reliable winter operation, sludge Big Bags are placed in an additional insulated area. A Tosibox remote access module allows PPU experts to support commissioning and ongoing optimization – especially during the initial operating phase.
The project was delivered on schedule and within the agreed budget.
Yes. Our systems are custom-engineered to match your wastewater composition, required effluent quality, and available space.
Whether your process involves metal finishing, machinery manufacturing, automotive parts, electronics, or plastics — the treatment concept is fully scalable.
We take fluctuations into account already during the design phase.
This includes:
• Buffer tanks
• Automatic pH control
• Dosing systems controlled by real-time measurements
• Process monitoring with alarm and safety functions
Fluctuations are therefore not a problem.
Yes. The combination of pH adjustment, coagulation/flocculation, lamella clarification, and optional downstream filtration ensures heavy metals are reduced to below detectable limits.
Yes. We offer:
• Insulated containers
• Optional heating systems
• Frost-protected sludge handling solutions
This ensures reliable year-round operation, even in cold climates.
A factory acceptance test (FAT) is performed before shipment.
Final commissioning takes place either on-site or remotely — depending on your requirements.
